Chesapeake Avenue Streetscape

Chesapeake Avenue Streetscape

Nov. 1, 2017: The streetscape project consisted of raising and resurfacing the road, installing planted and lighted islands to beautify and reduce traffic speed, installing new energy-efficient street lights (no longer in the middle of the sidewalks) and new crosswalks. With these improvements, you naturally have to slow down and be more attentive while driving on Chesapeake Avenue. The islands are visually appealing, the crosswalks provide safety and curb appeal and the trees in the islands make the islands visible to drivers.

In January 2017, the Town of North Beach requested bids for the North Beach Streetscape project for Chesapeake Avenue (from 1st Street to 7th Street). The purpose of this project is to improve the streetscape on the main street through town and also improve pedestrian safety. This project will give Chesapeake Avenue a more “Main Street” look. The total project includes construction of curbed islands for plantings, sidewalk reconstruction, fencing around Callis Park and North Beach Senior Center, milling and re-paving of Chesapeake Avenue from 1st Street to 7th Street to include the addition of new light poles with banners and the ability for decorative features and crosswalk improvements in this area.

The roadwork and concrete portions of this project are complete. The electrician has run conduit in all tree wells. New light poles, bases and lights are to be installed upon delivery of these items. Landscaping in the tree wells will follow the light pole installation. The new entrance, seating wall and fencing has been completed in the Callis Park area. Works continues inside Callis Park, including moving the existing pavilion and installing a new walkway new walkway from Chesapeake Avenue to Dayton Avenue.
