Horseshoe Crabs on the Beach

Have you spotted the Horseshoe Crabs on the beach? The Full Moon, usually between May and June, brings these ancient travelers from deep waters to our beaches to lay eggs. Last weekend, Lisa Garrett, Community Conservation Outreach Coordinator for the Town of North Beach, was at the waterfront to teach beach goers about Horseshoe Crabs.

It is important to respect the Horseshoe Crabs and their environment. Don’t disturb them during spawning, but if you come across one that is upside down, gently turn it over to help continue its journey. If you find one trapped among the rocks, try to free it safely.

Head over to the Chesapeake Bay Program’s website for additional information on Horseshoe Crabs.
