Important Weather Updates

Please read the following updates in full regarding the weather conditions. We are advising all citizens to obey the signs and blockades in town. Do not drive or walk around barricades on the streets or boardwalk. Do not walk through or drive through flooded roadways. 

The Calvert County Office of Emergency Management will be opening Huntingtown High School at 3:00 pm today as an emergency shelter. The shelter is for residents that are affected by the current weather conditions and flooding. Evacuation is NOT mandatory. This is a pet-friendly shelter and it is recommended that you bring your pet in a cage with food and water. Assistance in temporarily relocating your pet will be available.

According to the latest advisories from the National Weather Service:

  • There is a wind advisory in effect until 6 pm this evening. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Secure outdoor objects.
  • The Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 2 pm Saturday. Two to three feet of inundation above ground level in low lying areas due to tidal flooding on the shoreline in Calvert County until 2 pm Saturday, especially around the time of high tide. At 4.0 feet, portions of 7th, 8th, and 9th Streets will flood in North Beach, with homes affected near 9th Street. Tides up to 4 feet above normal. The next high tide is at 11:26 pm. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
  • The Hazardous Weather Outloook for today and tonight: Locally damaging wind gusts from heavier showers or an isolated thunderstorm are possible this afternoon and early evening. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out across southern Maryland. A Flood Watch is in effect from 10 am this morning through 6 pm for the Washington and Baltimore Metropolitan areas. Elsewhere, isolated instances of flooding are possible. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday High impact tidal flooding is expected into Saturday night. Coastal Flood Warnings are in effect for many shoreline areas along the Chesapeake Bay and Tidal Potomac River through Saturday night. Moderate tidal flooding is expected, and major flooding cannot be ruled out in a few locations.
