What's Growing on the Roof?

Official logo for the town of North Beach.

The green roof on top of the North Beach Town Hall is an eco-friendly feature that serves as an energy-saving measure for the building. This vegetated roof slows down water runoff, which helps prevent local erosion and reduces pollutants from reaching the Chesapeake Bay. Additionally, it provides a thermal benefit by naturally lowering heat gain compared to traditional roofs.

The plants on the roof, which are primarily succulent varieties, store water within themselves, allowing them to absorb rainwater and decrease runoff. These drought-resistant plants require minimal watering, even during the summer months. You can sometimes catch a glimpse of the roof from the direction of Chesapeake Avenue and 2nd Street, especially in the summer months when the plants are more colorful. The pictures below were taken in March 2024 as part of a routine inspection of the roof.
